Catherine Lyons
Catherine is a 4th-year medical student at UVA, originally from Alabama. She earned a BS in Biomedical Sciences and a BA in Spanish Language from the University of South Alabama. Throughout undergrad and medical school, she has been deeply involved in both clinical and lab research, finding joy in the process of scientific discovery and writing. Beyond medicine, she enjoys playing tennis and practicing yoga. As chief editor of the UVA MSR, she looks forward to fostering a platform that celebrates curiosity, creativity, and the power of storytelling in medicine.

Aaron Dayne Smith
Aaron Dayne is a fourth-year medical student at the University of Virginia, originally from Idaho. He studied music theory and biology at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah. His research journey began with studying the metabolic patterns of yeast strains in beer fermentation, and he is now primarily focused on dermatological pathologies and treatments. This diverse background has given him a broad appreciation for scientific literature across disciplines. Outside of medicine, Aaron enjoys reading with a black coffee in hand, learning swing dance, and exploring downtown Charlottesville. As Chief Editor of the Virginia Journal of Medicine, he aims to cultivate a platform where medical research, curiosity, and academic excellence thrive.

Uriel Kim
I have always been an avid reader and artistic person who loves to create. I am interested in serving on the editorial board of UVAMSR because it is an opportunity to contribute to creating a collaborative journal. I have always found that the best and most meaningful creations come with collaboration and constructive feedback and I would love to be part of that process.

Elo Okah
Elo is a third-year medical student interested in child & adolescent psychiatry. With a background in Biology and Creative Writing, she enjoys using storytelling and visual arts to make science more engaging. She has been involved in research on socio-emotional learning, social inequities, and cognitive function. Outside of school, she spends her time reading, writing, and hanging out with her teenage nine-year-old daughter.

Evan Lamb
Evan is an MD-PhD student who is finishing up his graduate studies on interactions between the immune system and pathogenic bacteria. His interests broadly include Infectious Diseases, Immunology, Epidemiology, and Pathophysiology. Originally from Iowa, Evan is proud to be at UVA and eager to support The UVAMSR in its mission.

Abel Ruiz Diaz
Abel Ruiz Diaz was born and raised in Cuba and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 10. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a specialization in Biochemistry from the University of Virginia. As an undergraduate, he conducted research in a molecular biology lab investigating how aerobic and resistance exercise influence disease, with a focus on diabetes mellitus. He is currently a medical student at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and continues his research with the UVA Orthopaedics department. Outside of medicine, he enjoys playing the drums, listening to music, and spending time with loved ones

Allison Horvath
Allison is a first year student in the UVA MD/PhD program. Originally from New Jersey, she completed her undergraduate degree at the George Washington University majoring in Neuroscience and minoring in Psychology and Music. Her current research interests include developmental neurobiology and neural injury, but the list is forever growing. With a drive for translational medicine, Allison is excited to support the research and patient experiences within the UVA community through MSR.

Bhavik Patel
Bhavik is a third-year medical student at UVASOM and also a double Hoo having done undergraduate at UVA in Cognitive Science. He is passionate about global health as well as serving the underserved and immigrant population within healthcare. His current interests are emergency medicine, interventional radiology and surgery. Outside of medicine, you can find him cooking, kayaking, or probably just drinking coffee.

Emily Golden
Emily is an MD/PhD student in the graduate school years of her training. She is originally from Massachusetts and graduated from Northeastern University with a BS in Behavioral Neuroscience. During her undergrad, she was involved in basic neuroscience research at Northeastern, Harvard Medical School, and the University of Otago. In her gap years, she worked in neuroendocrinology clinical research at Massachusetts General Hospital. She is now in the lab of Alban Gaultier where she studies the role of mitochondrial DNA in triggering innate immune pathways within oligodendrocytes and its implications for neurodegenerative disease. Emily is excited to review submissions to the UVA MSR and support her peers in developing their research and science communication skills!

Hibo Wehelie
Hibo Wehelie is in the UVA SOM Class of 2026. Originally from Minnesota, she received her B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Minnesota. She is interested in plastic surgery, particularly oncologic reconstruction, surgical outcomes, patient-reported outcomes, and global health. Outside of medicine, she enjoys spending time outdoors, staying active, and being with family and friends.

Jack Ham
Jack is a rising 4th year medical student at UVA from Reston, Virginia. He spent 3 years at Northern Virginia Community College and graduated with a BS in biology from George Mason University. His research interests focus on pediatric orthopedics/sports medicine and increasing diversity in medicine by increasing recruitment of community college students to medical school.

Kaile Maske
Kaile is an M1 in the MD/PhD program at UVA, originally from Lexington, Kentucky. They graduated from Stanford University in 2023 with a B.S. In Chemistry. Their interests include neurodegenerative disease, drug design, and public-facing science education. Outside of science and medicine, Kaile enjoys volleyball, cooking, printmaking, and choral music.

Laiba Murad
Laiba is a fourth-year medical student. Born in raised in Pakistan, she immigrated to the US halfway through her life and settled in VA. She graduated from Mary Washington in 2021 with a bachelor's in biology and neuroscience. She is interested in community general surgery and global surgery. Outside of medicine, she enjoys being a part of the refugee community here in Cville and teaching science to children.

Maximillian Brune
Maximillian (Max) Brune is a first year medical student originally from Oregon. In 2022 he received his Honors B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Oregon State University, as well as completing a Spanish minor. During undergrad he conducted research on a newly discovered species of slug-parasitic nematode, as well as population genetic analyses of the pacific banana slug. His interests in medicine remain broad, ranging from ophthalmology to emergency medicine to oncology to dermatology. Outside of medicine, he enjoys playing/watching soccer, working out, hiking, and backpacking.

Ruja Parikh
Ruja is a 4th year medical student at UVA, originally from Denver. She studied neuroscience, philosophy, and cognitive science at the University of Colorado Boulder, and worked as an undergraduate research assistant in an fMRI lab investigating molecular neural markers as measures of executive function. Since starting medical school, she’s enjoyed delving deeper into health humanities, narrative medicine, and the intersections between storytelling and science. She’s looking forward to serving as an editor on the UVA MSR!

Vignesh Senthilkumar
Vignesh Senthilkumar is a 3rd-year MD/PhD student in the UVA Medical Scientist Training Program. Originally from Chino Hills, California, he received his B.S. in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics and a minor in History from UCLA. His research and clinical interests revolve around infectious disease, immunology, and tropical medicine. At UVA, Vignesh is a part of the Taylor Lab in the Carter Immunology
Center, where he studies post-infection auto-immunity, particularly anti-interferon antibodies produced after respiratory illnesses. Outside the lab, Vignesh is heavily involved with health policy, holding leadership
positions in the student sections of the Medical Society of Virginia and the American Medical Association. In the future, he aspires to combine his research and policy interests to contribute to global health initiatives.

William Lain
William Lain is a fourth-year medical student at the University of Virginia School of Medicine with a strong interest in general and vascular surgery. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from William & Mary, where he first developed his passion for research. His recent work has focused on clinical research and academic writing in general, vascular, and cardiothoracic surgery, as well as infectious disease, cardiology, and quality improvement. In addition to research, he is actively involved in mentorship, surgical education initiatives, and student organizations dedicated to professional development and community engagement.

Maya is an MS4 at Penn State College of Medicine who will be pursuing an Emergency Medicine residency. She is originally from Washington State but spent a few years working in the public health field in Utah before applying to medical school. Outside of medicine, she enjoys skiing, baking, and playing piano.

Rachel Chapman
University of Central Florida College of Medicine
Rachel Chapman is a third-year medical student at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine in Orlando. She graduated from Harvard University with a B.A. in Integrative Biology and has conducted research in continuous intraocular pressure monitoring at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Passionate about enhancing ophthalmology exposure in medical education, Rachel has developed case-based learning modules for ocular diseases and created a new ophthalmology elective for her school. She is the founder and CEO of EyeSentry, winner of the 2024 Florida Blue Healthcare Innovations Competition.

Aly Nguyen, MD
Associated Eye Care, Stillwater, Minnesota
Aly Nguyen obtained her MD from the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine in spring 2025 and was recently selected as 1 of 3 Pre-Residency Clinical Fellows with Associated Eye Care Associates in Stillwater, MN. She has a strong interest in ophthalmology, research, and medical education. Her latest research explores the use of intraoperative fluorescein angiography to improve surgical outcomes in diabetic retinopathy. Outside of the clinic, Aly enjoys weight-lifting, cooking, and watching stand-up comedy.

Leah Kunneth
University of South Alabama College of Medicine
Leah Kunneth is a 2nd year medical student at the University of South Alabama Whiddon College of Medicine. Originally from the suburbs of Chicago, Leah earned her BA in Psychology from South and is interested in continuing on as a psychiatrist in the future. She has been involved in clinical research with USA Trauma Surgery as well as basic science research in psychology and drug addiction during her undergrad years and into medical school. Outside of medicine Leah enjoys dancing, traveling, and being an amateur foodie.

Hannah Giannini
Vanderbilt University School of Medicine
Hannah Giannini is a first year graduate student in the Vanderbilt MSTP. She is originally from Alabama and earned her BS in Chemistry from the University of South Alabama. She is getting a PhD in Human Genetics studying DNA methylation in the context of clonal hematopoiesis. She hopes to specialize in pediatric medicine. Outside of the medical center, she enjoys practicing yoga and lifting.

Javier Jurado Vélez
University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine
Javier Jurado Vélez is a medical student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine, pursuing an MD/MSPH degree with aspirations to become a future physician-investigator. He is a T32 Predoctoral Trainee at the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science, where his project examines social determinants of health among rural, underserved patients with uncontrolled hypertension. His research interests focus on cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and health disparities.
Javier earned a Bachelor of Arts in Medicine, Science, and the Humanities at Johns Hopkins University, where he developed an interdisciplinary mindset. His research spans clinical studies on minimally invasive orthopedist procedures, writing an ethnography, and studying medical students’ attitudes toward patients with a disability in Peru. He has also become highly involved with the American Heart Association as a National Hispanic/Latino Cardiovascular Collaborative (NHLCC) Scholar and a Voting Member of the AHA Hypertension Professional/Public Education & Publications Committee.

Mohammad Hamo
University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine
Mohammad Hamo is a third year medical student originally from Birmingham. He graduated in 2022 from the University of South Alabama with a B.M. in Biomedical Sciences. During that time, he completed an honors thesis studying plasma mitochondrial DNA as a predictor of physical function in survivors of acute respiratory failure. He is interested in neurosurgery, brain tumor research, and ML image segmentation. Outside of medicine, he enjoys fishing, basketball, and hiking.

Jess Hammond
University of Utah School of Medicine
Jessica is a 2nd year medical student at the University of Utah! Originally from Utah and completed her bachelor degree from Westminster University in biology with a minor in chemistry. Current research is focused on sustainability in medicine and with the Orthopedics department. Interests in medicine are broad, ranging from oncology to orthopedic surgery! Outside of medicine, Jess religiously attends spin classes and enjoys reading, sunshine and being with friends and family!
