The Medical Student Summer Research Symposium Special Abstracts Edition of the Virginia Journal of Medicine highlights the scholarly work of medical students who participated in structured summer research programs at the University of Virginia. This collection represents a wide range of inquiry, including basic science, clinical research, medical education, health systems, and community-engaged scholarship, made possible through close faculty mentorship and institutional support.
This special edition reflects the mission of student-driven scholarship: to celebrate early academic inquiry, foster collaboration, and provide a platform for emerging physician-scientists to share their work with the broader medical community. Together, these abstracts showcase the curiosity, rigor, and innovation that define the next generation of physicians.
First Incision: Foundations of Surgery

The first edition of First Incision: Foundations of Surgery represents a collaboration between 44 medical students and 13 faculty reviewers at the UVA School of Medicine, led by Student Editor Grant O. Killian and Faculty Editor Dr. Stefan W. Leichtle. Together, they transformed early notes into a polished, high-quality resource for surgical education.
This edition embodies the mission of student-driven scholarship: to create a freely accessible, rigorously reviewed text that bridges classroom learning with patient care, equipping future physicians with knowledge essential for surgical training.
